Inguinal hernia repair under local anesthesia

An inguinal hernia occurs when a weak spot is created in the abdominal wall at the inguinal area. Through that spot, tissue such as abbominal fat or part of the intestine protrudes. The resulting bulge can be painful, especially when we cough, bend over or lift a heavy object.

An inguinal hernia doesn’t improve on its own, and usually grows larger as time goes by. Your doctor is likely to recommend surgery to fix an inguinal hernia that’s painful or enlarging. Inguinal hernia repair is a common surgical procedure.

Inguinal hernia can be safely performed under local anaesthesia and mild IV sedation thus avoiding general anaesthesia complications such as nausea, vomitting, late mobilization and other cardiorespiratory complications.

Perfect local anaesthesia is achieved through a small puncture of local anaesthetic a few minutes prior to surgery (transversus abdominis plane block-TAP block). During the procedure the Anaesthesiologist applies mild IV sedation and monitors vital signs. Reconstruction of the inguinal hernia is performed with the use of modern macroporous lightweight mesh.

Recently, technology innovation has given us the unique opportunity to use fully absorbable mesh and sutures eliminating the allready very low complications of mesh fixation (infection, chronic inguinal pain).

The patient is mobilized immediatelly after the end of the procedure and discharge follows a few hours later. There is usually mild postoperative discomfort for a few days that can be perfectly contolled with simple pain killers.

In general, inguinal hernia repair under local anesthesia in a one day surgery performed by an expert, is the simplest and safest way to treat the problem and minimise associated complications.
