Cataract eye surgery

Cataract surgery involves replacing the cloudy lens inside your eye with an artificial one. Cataracts are when the lens of your eye, a small transparent disc, develops cloudy patches that can cause blurry vision and increase the glare from lights.

Cataracts most commonly affect adults as a result of ageing and begin to limit vision. If a cataract makes it difficult for you to carry out your normal activities, your doctor may suggest cataract surgery.

In general, the decision of having a cataract surgery depends on how this condition affects our eyesight and quality of life. When a cataract interferes with the treatment of another eye problem, cataract surgery may be recommended. For example, doctors may recommend cataract surgery if a cataract makes it difficult for your eye doctor to examine the back of your eye to monitor or treat other eye problems, such as age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.

Types:

Cataract extraction with monofocal intraocular lens insertion

Cataract extraction with astigmatic (toric) intraocular lens insertion

Cataract extraction with multifocal intraocular lens insertion

There are several types of lens implant (intraocular lens, or IOL). Some of the types of lenses available include fixed-focus monofocal, accommodating-focus monofocal, multifocal, astigmatism correction (toric).
