Breast reduction

Breast reduction surgery or reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that permanently removes excess fat, tissue and skin from the breasts. Main indication for breast reduction is large breasts that often cause chronic back and neck pain due to their excess weight and mass. Additionally, this operation often helps women improve their self-image and ability to participate in physical activities.

A candidate that considers breast reduction surgery, should have a detailed consultation with his plastic surgeon in order to understand the procedure and to set realistic expectations always in accordance with his body symmetry.

In general, breast reduction surgery is recommended in women that have completed their childbirths as breast feeding after reduction mammoplasty can be troublesome. Also, women that want to lose excess weight should postpone breast reduction after the weight loss, in order to achieve the best aesthetic result.

The operation has a mean duration time of 90 minutes under general anesthesia. The patient is likely to leave the hospital on the same day while in some cases an overnight stay is required for monitoring.

In the postoperative period soreness and swelling of the breasts might be noticed. Care should be taken to follow the attending Surgeon’s recommendations for the recovery period.
