Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical procedure that increases the size of the breasts. This can be easily done by placing breast implants under breast tissue or chest muscles.
Main indications for augmentation mammoplasty are:
- Increase the size of the breasts
- Correct uneven breasts
- Correct breast deformities after breast surgery for other conditions
- Reshape breasts
A candidate for breast augmentation should have a detailed consultation with his plastic Surgeon, regarding surgical techniques, types of breast implants and after surgery expectations.
Special consideration should be given to the following:
Breast feeding after breast augmentation could be troublesome.
Routine screening mammograms might be more complicated and additional specialized views are required in most cases. Additionally, An MRI scan will be required three years after implant placement.
Breast implants don’t usually last forever. Depending on the implant type and after the first decade, a breast mammoplasty for replacing implants might be required.
Depending on the candidate’s age, a baseline mammogram might be needed prior to surgery.
The operation has a mean duration of 90-120 minutes and in almost all the cases, general anesthesia is required. The patient is likely to leave the hospital on the same day while in some cases an overnight stay is required for monitoring.
In the postoperative period soreness and swelling of the breasts might be noticed. Care should be taken to follow the attending Surgeon’s recommendations and advise for the recovery period.
